Local students find summer jobs with Cummings Properties

BEVERLY, MA, August 12, 2011 – As sisters, Jordan and Abigail Biggar, ages 20 and 18, are accustomed to spending a lot of family time together. This summer, togetherness extends to work time as well, with both taking summer jobs at Cummings Center in Beverly.

As a teenager, Jordan was already a familiar face around Cummings Center, working on the grounds crew as a landscaper. This summer, she has moved indoors, and is learning valuable workplace skills as a paid intern.

“I’m studying management at Wentworth Institute of Technology, so this is an ideal spot for me,” she said. In addition to acquiring marketable skills, Jordan said the position offers competitive pay and some flexibility to pursue other summertime activities.

“Last year I did a service trip to the Dominican Republic, and the Company was great about working with me so I could fit the trip into my schedule,” she said.

Abigail, who will be a freshman at Eastern University in Pennsylvania this fall, is working her second summer as a member of the grounds crew.

“I’m having a great summer,” she said. “It’s a lot of fun, and I am definitely planning to come back next year.”

For 40 years, Cummings Properties has welcomed neighborhood youth as summer workers. This year, more than 50 area high school and college students, including 12 from Beverly, have found summer jobs with the commercial real estate firm, at both its Beverly and Woburn locations.

“The Company places a huge emphasis on hiring locally whenever possible,” said Steve Drohosky, Cummings Center’s general manager. “Hiring students is one aspect of being a good corporate citizen, and a way to reach out to the community.”

The students are employed primarily as paid general workers doing landscaping, property maintenance, and office work. According to Division Manager Tim Parziale, those who return summer after summer have opportunities to earn scholarship funds as well as a steady paycheck. They also learn many varied skills, whether they work in the office or the field, he added.

“These are diligent, hardworking young adults,” said Parziale. “They are very smart, and quick to figure out tasks and get the work done. They are also polite and friendly, which is important, as they frequently interact with Cummings Center clients and visitors.”
